Experts tell us the first step in becoming an environmentalist is noticing what nature offers. Such observation often leads to a desire and commitment to conserve and protect the natural world.

Being in nature is a regular part of our Science Summer Camp at Swift Nature Camp. Yet it is so important that we are intentional so we do not overlook the sounds, sights, textures and diversity of the ecosystem.

Please read these simple programs that can be done while walking through the woods. You may need suppliesbut it will take only a few minutes to get them.

Alow children to stop along the way and do the activities together. Let your chhildren choose one or more of the following activities:

Find the Color
Supplies: Paint samples--you can get these at the paint store for free.
Ahead of time: Pass out the color strips.
Assignment: Look for colors in nature that match the color strip. Record what you find. You can collect any samples on the ground, but if the color is on a living plant, you can pick it only if there are six remaining after you have done so. You can even make this a race for younger children

Supplies: Index cards and pencils

Have you ever slaved all summer to grow a beautiful garden, only to find it demolished after one night of deer snacking? How can you be assertive without hurting animals that are just trying to survive? You can't build a fence because, in addition to being very expensive, the deer will probably find a way over it. You must guard against deer by using their survival instincts for your own gain and repelling them in any way you can. You will have to find the right deer repellent for you.

As with most other animals, deer are very sensitive to smell. They are a comparatively docile form of wildlife and run away at the first sign of a predator. The urine of a predator is the best way to mark your territory--but there is something about walking around with a spray can of urine in your hand and spraying it around your garden. How about the edible stuff?

There are scented chemicals that are similar to the smell of real animal urine. Few animals would be willing to risk getting food that is clearly in the middle of a predator's territory. These can be found in any hunting or home care department. Still there is something about spraying stuff that stinks on to the plants.

They also hate high pitched noises. Blowing a dog whistle is enough to drive them crazy, or you can invest in an automatic whistle that will sound every time a deer comes around. The latter option is best, since that way you won't have to run to the window every time you imagine a noise in the back yard.

Some claim chopped garlic has a strong enough scent to make deer turn back. Others swear by chopped up hot peppers. If you hang bars of Dove soap above your plants, that is also rumored to work. Other uses are moth balls, ammonia, vinegar, and cloves. Try things out until you find one that really works!

One other way to go is to plant plants that deer find distasteful; if you surround your valuable plants with these, the deer may not even get close enough to your garden to find the palatable plants. This technique is called 'deeroscaping, ' meaning your yard has been fashioned to deter deer by the usage of plants. These plants include any ornamental grasses, sage, verbena, spearmint, or mums. In winter, though, almost any plant is fair game. When deer are starving, they seldom care about gross smells or irritating noises. How to Make a Great Red Eared Slider Tank

What You Need in Your Turtle's Tank

When you build your red eared slider tank, you have to make sure you have the proper equipment. The size of your turtle will determine what size tank you need, but you can generally start with a tank that is 20 to 55 gallons. One way to estimate the proper size is to have ten gallons of water for every inch of turtle. For example, if your turtle is six inches long you should have about a sixty gallon tank. Using this rule will help you find the right size to make your turtle its healthiest.

Your turtle's tank must have water and a "land" area. Make sure the water is deep enough that the turtle can be submersed completely. Keep in mind that your red eared slider is aquatic and spends much of its time in the water. But because your turtle cannot breathe under water, it need a land area to rest on. Do not use organic materials, but stick to things like rocks for the land area. If you include things like wood chips, your turtle may eat them (which is bad for its health) or they may rot and grow fungus.

A filtering system is optional for keeping the water clean. If you do not use one, you will need to keep an eye on your turtle's water to make sure it stays clean. Remember that excess turtle waste left in the tank can make your turtle sick.

As a cautionary note, it is important to keep in mind that if you do have an automatic filtration system, it is not set to suck in water too hard. If your turtle gets caught in the system and stays submerged for too long, it can drown.

Finding The Right Temperature For Your Red Eared Slider Tank

You need to make sure you are keeping your red eared slider tank at the right temperature. Keeping your indoor red eared slider warm is important. 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature at which to keep your turtle. Lowering the temperature 5 to 10 degrees at night is also an option. A heat lamp is a good way to keep the tank at the right temperature.

As a side note, you should be careful about sudden shifts in temperature for your red eared slider. This is normally the result of moving the turtle from indoor to outdoor, or vice versa. Control Barking With Respect

Respect comes with leadership and your dog must respect your leadership in order to be well-adjusted, well-behaved and happy. You will effectively lose dog bark control, if every time he or she barks, you react with discipline or with what they want. By reacting you are reinforcing your dogs behavior. Eventually your dog will learn, "If I bark and keep barking I will get what I want."

Affection and play-times are obviously necessary aspects of life with a dog, but they have to be doled out on your own terms. If she learns that she can get what she wants by barking, then your house is going to become a Noise Pollution Zone (and this is not going to endear you to your neighbors, either).

To prevent this bullying behavior in your dog from assuming a familiar role in her repertoire of communications, you have to prove to her that you're not the kind of person that can be manipulated so easily. It's simple to do this: all you have to do is ignore her. I'm not talking about passive ignorance, where you pay her no attention and simply continue with whatever it was you were doing - you need to take more of an active role. This means conveying to her through your body language that she is not worthy of your attention when she acts in such an undesirable manner.

When your dog barks to try to get you to do something for him or her and this behavior is unwarranted, simply turn your back to them, right away. Don't look at them, don't make eye contact, don't even say "no!", totally give then the "cold shoulder". If this means getting up and turning your back to them, than do it. This will confuse your dog for a minute, but be ready for more barking. In fact, the barking my become worse before it gets better. It only makes sense, the barking has worked for your dog in the past, why wouldn't work again.

As with any dog training, you must remain consistent. Giving in half way though the lesson will only teach your dog, "the more persistent I am the more I will get what I want." If it used to take five minutes of barking to get a walk out of you and now it takes ten minutes, be sure that you have just trained your dog to bark for ten minutes to get a walk out of you. Now, what can you do if your dog is not the manipulative type, and you just want then to stop the noise? You can safely and humanely, quiet your dogs barking by using your hands. No, I don't mean beating your dog until they shut up, no matter bad you may have wanted to do this in the past. No, this is a pain free method of getting your point across, that right now is the time for peace and quiet.

You can do this by:

when she's barking, give her a second to 'get it out of her system' (it's a lot kinder, and a lot more effective, to give her a chance - however brief - to express herself before asking her to be quiet). If she doesn't calm down under her own steam, reach out and clasp her muzzle gently, but firmly, in your hand. She'll try to shake you off, or back away, so you can place your other hand on her collar to give you greater control. This method is useful for two reasons: firstly, it effectively silences the barking (since no dog, no matter how loud, can bark with her mouth shut!). Secondly, it reinforces your authority: you're showing her through direct physical action that you're a benevolent but firm leader who will brook no nonsense, and who won't balk when it comes to enforcing your guidance.

Hold onto her muzzle and collar until she's stopped trying to break free: only when she calms down and stops wriggling does it mean that she's accepted your authority. When she's still, hold on for one or two more seconds, then let her go and praise her. In addition to this short-term fix, there are also a few things you can to do to reduce your dog's need to bark in the first place.

The number-one cause for unwanted barking (as in, the kind of barking that's repetitive and is directed at nothing) is nervous, agitated energy - the kind she gets from not getting enough exercise. Most dogs function best with one and a half hours' exercise every day, which is a considerable time commitment for you. Of course, this varies from dog to dog, depending on factors like breed, age, and general level of health. You may think that your dog is getting as much exercise as she needs, or at least as much as you can possibly afford to give her - but if her barking is coupled with an agitated demeanor (fidgeting, perhaps acting more aggressively than you'd expect or want, restlessness, destructive behavior) then she almost definitely needs more.

Fortunately, the fix for this problem is pretty simple: you'll just have to exercise her more. Try getting up a half-hour earlier in the morning - it'll make a big difference. If this is absolutely impossible, consider hiring someone to walk her in the mornings and/or evenings. And if this is impossible too, then you'll just have to resign yourself to having a loud, frustrated, and agitated dog (although whether you can resign her to this state remains to be seen).

The second most common cause of excessive vocalization in dogs is too much 'alone time'. Dogs are social animals: they need lots of attention, lots of interaction, and lots of communication. Without these things, they become anxious and on edge. If you're at home with your dog, you're not paying attention to her, and she's spending a lot of time barking at what appears to be nothing, she's probably bored and lonely and would benefit from a healthy dose of affection and attention. - 29064

Chicken Coops

I first heard about people raising chickens in their own gardens back in 2004, when a friend of mine started doing it because he liked organic food and knowing that the eggs he ate came from animals that were treated and raised in a humane manner. He decided the only way to know for sure about that was if he raised the chickens himself. He did a lot of research on the different aspects of chicken coop design, and then he built two pretty decent-sized coops in his back garden, since it's pretty large. A few weeks after that we went over and my wife heard about it, and then nothing would do but that we raised some chickens of our own.

I was okay with it, I guess. We have a pretty big garden ourselves, but I couldn't see needing that many eggs so I managed to talk the missus into only one coop. Fine, she said, and then she left me to get started on the chicken coop design, going off with a big book under her arm called how to care for chickens. Well, I wasn't about to do all that research myself what with my friend already having done it, so I gave him a call and asked him to come over.

He did, and ran over the basics with me in the little shed I use as my workshop. First, he said, chickens need enough space to be comfortable, or they won't lay as many eggs as they should. I asked him how much space was enough, and he gave me these guidelines:

* Inside the coop " at least 4 square feet per bird

* Outside the coop in a run - at least 10 square feet per bird

* On roosts " 3 horizontal feet per bird.

Other than that, he said, I also needed to make sure there was enough ventilation in the chicken coop design to keep the chickens healthy. They naturally like temperatures that are neither extremely hot or cold, so adding windows into the top of the coop would allow air to circulate and keep the temperature in a range the poultry would like. With that in mind, I put in one that I could control how much it opens, since sometimes it gets cold here and a wide open one would let in drafts that the chickens would find just as uncomfortable.

He also told me about how chickens like to roost off the ground. Apparently this is because in the wild they sleep on tree branches to avoid predators, so that adding roosts into a chicken coop design that lets them do something similar will make them feel safer. I ended up choosing, at his recommendation, 2 x 2 boards with the sides rounded a bit to make it easier for my birds to grip them.

The last thing to consider was protection from some of the chickens' natural predators. Since there are so many, of so many different kinds"such as birds of prey, wild cats, and wolves or foxes"you need to consider all angles of attack when making your chicken coop design predator-proof. Make sure the walls of the coop are solid enough, and that any chicken wire you use has a small enough mesh to prevent them getting into the run. - 29064

Bloat is a canine disease that is the result of overeating or consuming food too fast. Overeating causes twisting of the stomach which in turn, cuts off the blood supply and traps gas. This is very painful for the dog and usually leads to a quick death. Be alert when your pet eats too fast and too much and look out for depression, dry heaves and restlessness.

Studies suggest that many of our dogs are prone to obesity. While obesity is not terminal in itself, it will prove to be a major detriment in their health. Obese dogs suffer more complications and will be a higher risk for surgery. Their vital organs will also have undue stress on them. By using 10 ml. of sweet almond oil as your base combine 6 drops of cedar wood essence and 12 drops of lavender essence. Shake the mixture generously and rub a few drops over the skin of your dog, especially around dog's neck and base of his tail. Repeat this treatment as needed or every 2 days.

Lastly, an all natural flea collar can be created by rubbing a few drops of citronella, lavender eucalyptus oil, Tea Tree Oil, or geranium essence on to your pet's ordinary rope webbing or rope or cloth collar. A bandanna would also work. Re-apply the oil at least twice per week.

Another helpful and common sense suggestion is to reduce your dogs exposure to fleas. You may want to begin by getting rid of dog fleas outside your home. A failure to do so will result in your pets continually getting infested. One way to get rid of them outside is to install a Purple Martin bird house. Purple Martins will eat the dog fleas, thus keeping the outdoors flea free.

Cushings disease occurs in horses, dogs and even people. However, the symptoms are different, depending on the species. Choosing a Horse at an Auction

If you are intending to buy a horse at auction, you need to be able to tell the quality horses from the problem horses. Remember that most horses at auction are sold 'as-is', so you do not have a guarantee and have little legal protection, even if the horse has a serious problem. Consequently, you need to do your own research on the horses in advance to identify the ones that are worth bidding on and the ones which you should keep away from.

One should start by arriving some hours before the auction starts, so that there is time to examine the horses, preferably starting as they arrive. Study them as they are being unloaded and put into their pens. They should walk easily, with no sign of discomfort. They should have an overall healthy appearance, with good muscles and shiny coat. One expects them to be alert and a bit nervous, due to the noise and unfamiliar surroundings of the auction. In fact, if they appear overly calm or indifferent, this is a sign of apathy likely due to illness or drugs.

If a person unloading a horse is its owner, their behavior will give you some useful hints about the horse. If they are gentle with it and appear sad to part with it, the horse has likely been well treated. However, if they are abrupt or rough with the horse, perhaps even hitting it, then it may well be an abused or neglected horse, with the associated issues.

Once the horses are unloaded, the next step is to go to where they are penned or stabled. Watch how the horses move and behave, eliminating any that have abnormal behavior. Look for any scars or blemishes, which can indicate previous injuries or mistreatment.

At this point, you will likely have eliminated most of the horses from consideration and have a short list of possible candidates. If the horse is still interesting, ask if it can be moved from the pen to somewhere where you can examine it without other horses. Don't go into the pen to examine a horse as the other horses moving about are too much of a distraction and a pen full of strange horses is simply too big an accident risk in any case. Run your hands over the entire horse, feeling for bumps or injuries, especially on the legs. Look carefully at the hooves, both top and underneath. While being careful with your fingers, check that the teeth are in good condition. Starting at the shoulder, put a finger on each side of the spine and firmly push, then move down an inch and repeat until you have covered the entire back. If the horse shows any pain or discomfort during this, you have a back problem which you need to be wary of. The horse may be slightly nervous during the examination but should not show fear or aggression at any point.

If you find a problem during the examination, but not enough to eliminate the horse immediately, ask the owner to explain it. If you are not satisfied with the answer or don't believe it, eliminate the horse. There will always be other horses and other auctions, so it is better to leave an auction without a horse than risk buying one which may have major issues. Once you have your final short list of horses, decide on a maximum price for each horse, as by the time bidding has started it is too late to think logically about this.

Before bidding on a horse, make sure that you have a place to keep the horse and to transport it there. If you haven't made arrangements in advance, discuss with the auction staff if they know of a reputable person that can do this for you. At this point you should be prepared for the bidding. During the 2000/01 winter season my hubby Richard and I decided to check out Palm Beach, Florida. Boy, did we demystify that scene. He got a job at a posh boutique hotel and I talked my way into being a makeup artist at Donald Trump's Maralago Spa/Salon! But that's another story.

We decided to get together at the Boynton Beach Mall. She was there to represent SAD/SAC (Save A Dog/Save A Cat). I missed her, but I made friends with another volunteer at the mall. We talked about Jackpot and she told me of a pointer/greyhound mix. I went right to her cage and everybody was gathered around her. She was for me and I paid the cost and drove her home. I named her Gabrielle (after french author Gabrielle Collette). When I got home Richard was taking a shower and heard barking and said "quiet down Cyd."

In April we went back home to Maine where we are living. Gabby loved the snow so we assumed she was originally from the north and was taken and let go in Florida. Later we found out that she was alone in Florida for 1 1/2.Three times she was taken home by adoptees, but they brought her back unable to control her and make her behave.

Before Jackpot passed he and Gabri spent a full year together. Jackpot left us at the age of- 1/2 about threyears longer than most dogs live. Our animals jumped and ran all over the house. We did not try and control them. We treated them as our equal and allowed then to have fun also. We reside in a small seaside town and were prone to walk the beach during the summer. We met many people and some even became friends all because of the animals. Jackpot was very approachable and loved the attention. Gabrielle was bonded to my wife at the hip.

The time had come for Gabrielle 10 days before Thanksgiving we had to put her to sleep. Now she is back together with JP Doggie Heaven. One of the toughest decisions you will ever make is putting animal to sleep. When they are in stress and there is nothing you can do don't wait to put them to sleep. They will only suffer. They give so much love and if you show you love them back it is returned many times over. They have to have dignity in life. Most of our friends are telling to adopt another dog right away. We want to rescue another animal and will do so very soon. We certainly miss Jackpot and Gabrielle.

Everyone quickly understands the basics of sports gambling, because its as simple as the sports themselves. Horse racing, on the other hand, is a more difficult form of gambling to approach successfully. While there are some similarities between sports gambling and horse handicapping, success in one by no means assures even competency in the other. CBS Sports icon Jimmy 'The Greek' Snyder was by all accounts a first rate sports handicapper, but downright awful at forecasting horse races.

Were not going to suggest that the information here even scratches the surface of what you need to know to become a serious horse handicapper. There are countless books, DVDs and other media that you should check out if this is your goal. If youre interested in simply knowing the basics so that you can enjoy a day at the track, here are some basic concepts of horse handicapping:

Reading in Fundamental: The first thing you should do when you arrive at the horse track is to purchase a track program and a copy of the Daily Racing Form. The Daily Racing Form (or DRF for short) is the Wall Street Journal of the horse handicapping set. The track program will offer much of the same information about the specific track, but is frequently in a more user friendly format than the often arcane DRF. The basic stats you'll find in these publications are the names of the horses, jockeys and trainers, the morning line odds, and the types of bets available for each race. You'll also have past performance charts, which are the bread and butter of serious horse handicappers. These charts reveal a lot about a horse and what theyve done on the racetrack, including its record, where it ran, the quality of competition it ran against, and what position the horse was in at various points in the race. Most tracks have customer service types that are helpful in clearing up anything you dont understand. While asking the personnel in a sports book who they like isn't a wise idea, its OK at the track for a reason well now discuss"you're not playing against them.

The House Doesn't Care Who Wins: One thing that is important for the sports bettor to remember when playing the horses is that its a parimutuel situation. In other words, you're not playing against the house, you're playing against the other bettors. The track just facilitates the betting and acts as a middleman, handling the money for a fee (15 to 25 percent of the parimutuel pool). Another difference is that the track odds are determined by how much money is bet on each horse. If everyone bets on one horse"whether it is the best horse, or just has the catchiest name"it will go off as the favorite. Long odds on a horse doesn't necessarily indicate a bad horse, but just one that the wagering public isn't investing in. Sometimes this can be one and the same, but not always.

So where do odds in the newspaper or program originate? These are known as the 'morning odds' or 'morning line' and is basically an educated guess as to where the betting will go. They can be helpful as a handicapping tool, but may or may not reflect what will happen in the actual betting.

Handicapping basics: There are so many different approaches to handicapping horse races that its difficult to even know where to start. Some handicappers emphasize past performance data. Others factor in the results of recent workouts, while others prefer a visual examination of the horses in the paddock.

Once a bettor reaches a conclusion about what he thinks will happen in a given race, it is still subject to the odds that are available when betting. This is similar to sports gambling, where an underdog may be more attractive due to an excessively high payback potential than he would ordinary, or, conversely, a clear favorite becomes an unattractive wagering proposition due to a prohibitively high price. Its all a matter of the math"if I could speak to the teenagers of America, Id try to impress upon them the importance of doing well in math for no other reason than its importance in all forms of gambling.

Trainers and breeding: Some handicappers prioritize a horse's breeding background--considering his bloodlines and the competitive quality of his parents and grandparents. Then training must be considered--a good trainer can often get a horse to 'over perform' much in the same way a good coach can get the most out of his team in sports.

The Jockeys: In the simplest terms, jockeys are independent contractors and thus to make money they need to do well. In theory, a jockey wants to get on the best horse possible in each race to maximize his chances of winning. That also results in sort of a chicken and the egg conundrum"are the horses winning because the best jockeys are aboard, or are the best jockeys merely adept at getting on the best horses? Most serious horse players look to the jockey as a secondary consideration. Its sort of a situation where a good jockey cant win with a bad horse, but a bad jockey can cause a good horse not to win.

Find your own style, and maintain discipline: Basically, there's not a 'right' or 'wrong' way to handicap a horse race. Figure out what works for you, and develop and refine your own methodology. As in any form of gambling, don't bet more than you can afford to lose and in particular when you're starting out there's no reason to be making big wagers.
